Margaret Maria interview with Jake Stern

What advice would you give to aspiring musicians, particularly those considering a transition from performance to composition or exploring diverse musical collaborations?

Be open, open and more open. Trial and error is always ok. Be open to ‘this may suck’ and go on creating it anyway. Stay true to the creative process and try to keep judgment as far away as possible during it. Be your own strongest supporter and cheering squad. How we impact the world as artists is sometimes unknown, and we can’t feel it immediately. But the world needs your voice and your art; it needs it desperately. Keep on making it!

Shapeshifting Music Maker

Margaret Maria's creativity knows no bounds.  Seamlessly drifting between genres and going where her spirit takes her, you will find a variety of music - some expected and some unexpected.  Venturing into her creativity is a shapeshifting activity in itself.  Opening up to her sonic world and exploring all its dimensions is the fascination.  

Initially a cellist with a traditional classical performance past, she has broken out of every mould to create something unique and always from the heart.  As a graduate of the Curtis institute of Music and a professional cellist with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra and the National Arts Centre Orchestra, she soaked up the music of the past to enable her to create music of the future.  

Margaret Maria is currently working on her Love Lesson series (which can be heard on her YouTube Channel and on her SoundCloud) and completing her Rock Opera 'The Lady Of the Moon' with her co-writer in Argentina, Julian Garcia-Reig.  She is also co-creating new Rage Angel Tracks with her co-writer, Craig McConnell, and teaching up a storm in Ottawa and with OrKidstra!! In addition, her inaugural composition and improv retreat 'Seeds of Creativity' course at BIIMA in Italy, is being planned again for July 2024. Two new albums are set to be released December 2023. Her 15'th studio album 'Goddess of Edges' and her ‘Marbyllia’ spontaneous music making duo with pianist Bill Gilliam releasing 'Uncountable Spheres' with a special new music video of 'Her Heart on a Platter' and a live performance at an official CD launch on December 2'nd at Annette Studios in Toronto. Her new singer/songwriting duo with Soul singer Tréson has its first single set to drop in December.

Travelling back and forth between Ottawa (where she teaches and works with the OrKidstra kids) and Toronto (where she creates, dreams and has her closet studio), trying to soothe her restless soul, meeting new friends along the way, constantly on the look out for making musical connections, and with her now full time new Pomsky puppy 'Gus' making her hustle even more!!

The Goddess of Edges is created on the wings of courage. Courage to be who she needs to be, courage to look deep within and see who she is and be radically honest with herself. She has the courage to give everything, knows she can create something out of nothing, is courageous in making choices but also choosing to leave when the environment becomes toxic and harmful. Choosing to be achingly alone to create, with the courage to follow her path against all odds.

‘She doesn’t understand the real world, not in the way others can live in it. Its pacing, its timing, how things unfold, they feel foreign to her. She sees it all but it doesn’t make sense. Only living through music, seeing the world through music does the world take on a sheen, a colour, where energy and waves move her, where melodies and emotions ebb and flow from within her. She lives between things. Her experience of the individual and connective energies of the world is heard through the musical emotions that she is constantly sensing and expressing. Feeling helpless limitation in my human form is a recurring theme throughout my life. But nothing has felt more helpless than the pandemic that paused 2020 around the globe with the fear of great loss of life in the world and close to home, followed by my own health issues and subsequent Covid near death experience that my sister had endured this

Feeling helpless limitation in my human form is a recurring theme throughout my life. But nothing has felt more helpless than the pandemic that paused 2020 around the globe with the fear of great loss of life in the world and close to home, followed by my own health issues and subsequent Covid near death experience that my sister had endured this year. How we cope with being spirits in such an imperfect human world, how we bond, how we express, how we continue to remain strong, is a testament to who we are. Expressing emotions and connecting with love and care to the world around us is all we really have in the end. We can’t hold onto anything or anyone, and it’s even more apparent when we are ill or gravely suffering. This music is born of this helplessness in the hope that it can be helpful to others…it can offer some healing, some understanding, some comfort, some strength when we feel weak or when words fail us.
